President Ray Taylor welcomed his fellow Rotarians to the first meeting of the Rotary Club of Westlake Village of 2015.

 

Michael Chulak led the flag salute.

Barbara Chilton deferred leading the song to PP Jeanne Archer who led the club in “Auld Land Syne.”

Charles Bloomquist provided the invocation. 

 

PP Brad Ormsby introduced the following guests:

Ken Warner – a visiting Rotarian from the Thousand Oaks Club

Harold Hyman – a visiting Rotarian from the Rotary Club of Lahiana, Maui and a special guest of PP Ed Pope.

Jennifer Miller –special guest of the Club

 

 

Audrey Oland passed around a sign-up sheet for delivering Meals on Wheels for the months of January and February.

Kerry Kallman provided an update on the annual Street Festival which will be held on Sunday, April 12.  Co-Chairs PP Jeanne Archer and Kerry Kallman are working on a few new concepts for the event including a Westlake Village Craft Beer Booth, Car Display, Farmers Market, Fitness Area, and a revamped kids zone.  The kid’s zone is being organized by Ronnie Stone and the Triunfo YMCA. 

All are welcome to join the planning Committee.  The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, January 14 at 11:00 am at North Ranch Country Club (right before the noon meeting)

IMPORTANT – We need a sponsorship chair.  This is the area where the club makes most of its money on the Street Festival.  If you would like to chair this very important component or help out, please contact Kerry or Jeanne directly.

 

Linda Levine thanked those who brought in donated blankets and towels animals in shelters.  These items help keep these abandoned pets warm during the winter.  Linda will once again collect items at the January 14 meeting.

 

The club recognized PP Edwin Velarde for his participation in the annual Rose Parade as a participant on the Rotary float.

 

Dapper Spar provided an update on the Group 4 efforts to raise funds for K9’s for Warriors.  Plans for a gala event at the Regan library have been changed.  Instead, a series of smaller club level fundraisers are being planned.  More info to come. 

 

Club Service Committee – Monday, January 12 at KCLU.  The meeting will begin ay noon and lunch will be served.

Street Festival Committee – Wednesday, January 14 at North Ranch Country Club.  The meeting will begin at 11 am.

International Service Committee – Saturday, January 17 at PP Ed Pope’s home.  Ed will be cooking!

 

Mary Olsen led a round of Happy Dollars

Dapper Spar is simply happy.

Nadine Larson is happy she saw Edwin on TV during the Rose Parade.

Harold Hyman is happy Oregon is in the National Championship game.

PP Ed Pope is happy for landing a new defense contract.

Mel Levine was happy Mary is not stunting her growth.

Harvey Magidow is happy that his doctor said he can return to all activities.

Marion Hall Marshall is happy Bob won $100 in “Fun and Games.”

PP Andy Lupanow is happy that Ray is halfway done with his year as president and that the Club now has Kerry to plan his demotion party. 

PP Edwin Velarde is happy he did not get pneumonia during the Rose Parade and his son made the All State Honor Band.

 

President Taylor was happy to report that after a serious mountain biking accident, Jack Dwyer is out of the hospital and feeling much better.

 

PP Brad Ormsby led a session of “Craft Talks” featuring new members Todd Fisher and Pete Touisi.  Todd is a realtor and a huge fan of Elvis Presley.  (Interesting as today, January 8, would have been Elvis’ 80^th birthday.)  Pete was born in Iran and came to the United States in 1979 on the same day Khomeini came to power in Iran.  Pete is a software designer. 

 

With a few minutes left in the meeting, President Ray Taylor asked PP Andy Lupinow and Charles Bloomquist to spin the “Wheel of Misfortune.  The spin netted #20 which is a fine for the oldest member at their table.  Surprisingly, neither Charles or Andy were the oldest at their table, President Taylor invoked his Executive Privilege and fined them anyway.
