Visiting Rotarian Lois Curran Klein started off the meeting by leading the Flag salute. The world-renowned singing duo of PP Charles Bloomquist and PE Ray Taylor led "Take Me Out to the Ballgame", followed by Charles' poetic invocation.

Youth Service Announcements: Youth Services Chairperson Barbara Chilton is attending RYLA this weekend. Our club sponsored 6 attendees this year.
Vocational Service: The Vocational Service Luncheon is Friday May 9 at the Hyatt. A limited number of tickets are still available for the reduced price of $20 each. Come see which of our club members will be honored by Rotary Group 4. PP Gary Dickey will be delivering the invocation at this event (which counts as a district event, for those of you who still need a district event to get your blue badge.)
This week's challenge: Bring your family into Rotary. We have a few members who are second generation Rotarians (PP Bill Notthoff), and even a third-generation Rotarian (Barbara Chilton). How many of us have sponsored our own children into a Rotary Club?
OakHeart Chairperson Steve Kerrigan kicked off OakHeart 2014 with a great presentation! With help from Cassandra, Troy, Brian Hynes, and Kyle Griffith, we enjoyed music video clips of the headliners, and were treated to an overview of the site. The weekly meetings are on Mondays. Come and see what is going on. Our club is charged with managing the volunteers. There will be 150+ volunteers. Rotarians are business leaders, so this is a natural fit. Sign-ups were on the tables. Lots more information to come. This is going to be GREAT!!!
The biggest need at this point is for financial sponsorships. Start small by buying a banner. Consider being a corporate sponsor of a higher dollar value. Have a referral for a sponsor? Brian makes it easy. Call him with details of your referral and he'll make the call for you. You know the drill: your club needs all of you: your time, your talent, your treasure. Our Program Today: The Greater Contribution
Rotarian Karon Wright made her third visit to our club. The Greater Contribution was started by four local women, and focuses their efforts in rural Uganda, where 75% of the poor are women. Women are the breadwinners in this part of Africa. THe facts bear out that women reinvest in family and community. Karon shared one story of a woman who now has a mini=-maize factory, and has hired three employees. She reminded us of the adage "rising tides lift all boats.".
This microfinance program has brought hope back to the region. Shahira had a sewing machine and started her business by sewing one school uniform at a time. This loan enables her to purchase fabric in bulk, and led to a contract providing all the uniforms for a school.

PP Edwin Velarde suggested that partnering with Rotary Global Grants would enable all the money to go even further.
We lucked out again with great weather in the Conejo Valley this weekend. Even with the rain and wind on Friday and Saturday, Sunday turned out to be a beautiful day.
Thanks to Anita, Charles, Carter and Bella, Bob and Marion, Ray, Kyle, Brian, Shaylin, Dapper, Stephanie and John, for coming out and sharing the word about OakHeart 2014. We sold some tickets, and some tee-shirts, and handed out lots and lots of information cards. It was good to be on the site of OakHeart 2014. This will make it easier to visualize the set-up for OakHeart 2014.
Our next Rotary event is the Westlake Sunrise Wine and Jazz Fest on May 18. We'll need a few Rotarians to attend the Wine/Jazz Fest and sell for OakHeart 2014. Just a reminder that it's time for Annual Dues. The additional charge for dues appears on the June invoice, and is due at that time. This $100 charge is paid forward by our club to the District 5240 and to Rotary International. The total cost of the combined dues is approximately $130 annually. The difference is subsidized by our club's general income.
