Memorial Day Activities:
  • Morning: Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks Memorial Park - 10:30 until noon    Hundreds of flags will create a virtual carpet of red, white and blue as community members join their neighbors at Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks-Griffin Memorial Park, a local Dignity Memorial® provider, to honor American heroes who died in the service of their country. This year’s free event, which is expected to draw more than 3,000 guests, will be held May 26th and begin with a stirring musical prelude performed by the renowned Air National Guard Band of the Southwest at 10:30 a.m. Jointly hosted by Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks-Griffin and the cities of Westlake Village and Thousand Oaks, the event will be held at 5600 Lindero Canyon Road, in Westlake Village, in the Garden of Valor.
  • BBQ at PP Ed Pope's home, noon to 5 p.m. (more to follow)
  • Beatles tribute show at Dover and Hendrix Park in Thousand Oaks, 5 p.m. (arrive early) Two of "The Stars of Beatlemania" will be in this performance.(no pets allowed).  Onsite parking only for those displaying handicap parking permits; others should be prepared to walk.  Bring a blanket for lawn seating.

Reminder for May 21:  It's early buffet/mini meeting day on May 21st.  We are three weeks out from OakHeart, so we will be gearing up for that event.

Each year, the Rotary Club of Westlake Village sets aside a day to recognize the work of local charitable and non-profit organizations and donate to their causes.

The money for today's event comes from the 2013 Community Street Festival.

Our club is able to give back, financially, to local projects, based on the principle that money raised through local fundraising projects is best spent in the local community.  We’re grateful to the business sponsors who have supported our club events over the years.  Matech, All Eye Care (Tim Trinh), Dapper Spar, ERP Power, and Warner Pacific Insurance (Dave Nelson), City of Westlake Village, and to our in-kind sponsors and entertainers: KCLU, Claddagh School of Dance, Ventura County Star, HR Designs, Video Game Bus, Angel City Big Band, and The Coveralls.

Today we have invited the selected recipients to join us for food and fellowship, so we can present them with our club’s donations, and so they can tell us a little something about their work.  Many of the names today are familiar to most of you, since you also work with them on your own.  And we have some new names as well.  Because when a need is discovered, it seems there are good people who set out to fill the gap.

The Day of Giving Committee presented our club's contributions today.
Director Nadine Larson presented checks to Meals on Wheels Westlake Village, represented by Mary Whitlock.
to Manna of the Conejo, represented by Jennifer Schwaubauer, and to Senior Concerns-Meals on Wheels, represented by Lisa Weaver and her husband Bob.
Brian Hynes presented to Big Brothers Big Sisters, represented by Danica Selvaggio.
PEN Dapper Spar presented to Villa Esperanza, represented by Claudia De Haro.
PP Brad Ormsby accepted the contributions for Conejo Valley Amateur Radio and for Disaster Communications.

A new group (new to our Club this year) is Our Community House of Hope.  Due to your President's poor communication skills, Ann Sobel was unable to attend our luncheon, but she sends her thanks for us for selecting their group as one of our recipients this year.
