Meeting Notes for February 11 and 18, 2014

 

President Ray Taylor welcomed his fellow Rotarians to the weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Westlake Village.

Harvey Magidow led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Russ Stone broke with tradition and led the club in singing “You’re a Grand Old Flag”

PP Brad Ormsby provided the invocation.

PP Jeanne Archer updated members on the planning for the April 12 Street Festival.  Past President and newly rejoined member Karen Quigley will be handling work assignments at the Street Festival.  Additionally, members are being asked to provide sponsorships for the event.  Please contact Kimmy Tharpe or Todd Fisher if you would be interested in sponsoring and/or know of a potential sponsor.

 

Jim Campbell has put together another great social event for members.  On Monday, February 23 the Club will once again take over the Stonehaus at the Westlake Village Inn for wine, food, and fellowship.  Click here for the events flyer.

 

Audrey Brown and Poornima Prasad were the first two new members to shed their Red Badge and receive the coveted Blue Badge.  Rumor has it both of these fine Rotarians will receive a bottle of wine from Ray Taylor’s private collection.  We are not sure if a corkscrew is needed.  Congrats to both of you!

 

 

The popular Mary Olsen was at the meeting which only means one thing: HAPPY DOLLAR!

Charles Bloomquist was happy he was not the only member wearing a Hawaiian Shirt.

Jack Dwyer felt bad for not recognizing Cy Johnson.

Russ Stone was happy his grandson hit the game winning 3 point field goal in his high school basketball game.

PP Ed Pope is happy that his arbitration hearing against G.E. is coming up and he will be able to put the entire matter behind him.

Audrey Brown was happy to be leaving for a vacation to the Dominican Republic.

PP Andy Lupanow was happy to use his wife’s $10 winning Fun and Games Check for Happy Dollar.

 

PP Ed Pope led another induction ceremony for two new members, Veronica Ellias and Armando Lozano.  I have it on good authority that President Ray Taylor is changing his goal of one new member a month during his Presidency to two new members each month. 

 

 

 

PP Bill Nothoff kicked things off by providing an overview of the Homer Dickerson Youth Ethics Conference.  Named after longtime and former member Homer Dickerson, the event teams Rotarians with a group of local high school students in a roundtable format to discuss an ethical challenge.  Having had the privilege of attending two previous Ethics Conferences, I can honestly say this is a great experience and one that all club members should consider.  The Homer Dickerson Youth Ethics Conference will be held on Thursday, March 5 at California Lutheran University.  Sign-ups are currently underway. Special thanks to Russ Stone who, in spite of not being an active member of the club, continues to head up this wonderful event. 

 

PP Brad Ormsby outlined the club’s two charitable foundations.  The first,  the Rotary Club of Westlake Village Foundation, was established in 1986 with the primary mission of providing scholarships for graduating seniors at local high schools.  The second, the Rotary Club of Westlake Village Unrestricted Charitable Fund’s primary mission is to provide community gifts from funds raised through club events and donations.

 

 

Steve Kerrigan provided an update on the June 6 Oakheart Country Music Festival.  The event began four years ago with the goal of becoming the Club’s major fundraiser.  Last year, the event drew an estimated 5,000 attendees and is on track to become a major annual Conejo Valley Event.

 

 

A very special thank you to Harvey Magidow for setting up the plant tour at the Conejo Valley Veterinarian Hospital.  By all accounts it was a wonderful tour and those in attendance really enjoyed it.    Way to go Harvey!
