John Loesing of Agoura Hills is the Managing Editor of the 5 Acorn Newspapers. He has been with the Acorn since 1999. He is a two-time California Newspapers Publishers Association editorial winner. John Loesing also hosts this week in Beverly Hills. A weekly news update program for the City of Beverly Hills government television channel.

 

The Acorn Newspapers have 140,155 combined circulation and has been in business for 40 years. There is now a Free Lifestyle Magazine that is published quarterly called “Beyond The Acorn.” In the old days, some of the topics often written about were the pole sign controversy, city incorporation, battles with the county and new development. When it first started the advertisement for Ralph’s showed you could get London Broil for $1.69 a pound and a head of iceberg lettuce for a quarter. The Acorn remains

The “people’s paper.” It believes that community comes first and that a  story about a creative Eagle Scout is as important as the controversial city council meeting that heads into midnight. The Acorn’s mission and philosophy are that it is not just a traditional watchdog role but a sounding board for the community. It covers niche stories that matter to locals and strives to have honest, fair and balanced reporting. The Acorn covers local cities, school districts, counties and some state news, community events, positive human interest stories, education coverage, youth sports, and hard news.  The Acorn uses submitted photo’s from the community and has reader participation in stories such as Take Your Acorn on Vacation, Squirrel of the Month, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Graduation.
