Announcements:

 

October 24^th was World Polio Day and National Immunization Day.  Stephanie Spar went around collecting $1 for the privilege of having the “purple pinky.”

           

Rose Tudor and Kimberly Tharpe each received their Blue Badge.

 

Mary Olsen passed around the sign-up sheet for the business card and personal interest board to be placed outside our meetings to help members know more about each other.  If you are interested, please get your information to Mary.

 

Dapper Spar announced a Club Services Meeting on Monday, November 2 (CLU) and a Board Meeting on Tuesday November 3^rd at 7:30 am (Westlake City Hall).

 

Steve Kerrigan announced that the 2016-2017 District Conference would be held in Westlake Village. They need one person from each club in Region 2 to assist Vicki Arndt, Nick Frankel’s conference chair.

Program:            Jacqui Irwin, State Assemblywoman for the 44^th District

 

            Jacqui Irwin was elected in November 2014 to represent California’s 44th Assembly District, which includes the communities of Camarillo, Casa Conejo, Channel Islands Beach, El Rio, Lake Sherwood, Moorpark, Oak Park, Oxnard, Port Hueneme, Santa Rosa Valley, Thousand Oaks, and Westlake Village.           

 

            While earning a Bachelor of Science in Systems Engineering from UC San Diego, Irwin was an All-American in swimming and attended national championships all four years (“Go Tritons”).  A proud mother of three young adults, Jacqui Irwin and her husband Jon, who serves as Head of Global Business Development for Amazon Instant Video, have lived in Thousand Oaks for nearly 20 years.  Jacqui Irwin also chairs the Veterans Affairs Committee, and serves on the Accountability and Administrative Review, Agriculture, and Higher Education and the Jobs, Economic Development, and the Economy Committees.

 

            She has also been appointed by Assembly Speaker Toni G. Atkins to serve on the Commission on the Status of Women and Girls, State Public Works Board, the Inter-Agency Council on Veterans, and the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children.

 

            She spoke of the need to have an engineering school at CSU Channel Islands to take advantage of the job opportunities with the military and other employers in this area.  After a very extensive review on the substantial variety of matters with which she is responsible, the discussion was opened for questions.  Ray Taylor wanted the members to know that Jacqui Irwin is the only legislator to reach out to him for information on matters effecting his community rather than Ray having to call the legislators.  Ray found this to be a very impressive quality.
