Program Past President Edwin Velarde presented “Raising Awareness of Diabetes”. Facts: - November is Diabetes Awareness Month.
- November 14th is World Diabetes Day.
- Without proper medical treatment Diabetes can cause kidney failure, blindness, loss of lower limbs and heart attack or stroke.
- Global Diabetes is real.
- 4 million die from Diabetes each year.
- 30% of those suffering from Diabetes live in the western Pacific Region (China, Philippines, Japan and Thailand).
Diabetes is near and dear to Edwin’s heart. Many of Edwin’s relatives suffered severe health issues from diabetes. Edwin was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (insulin dependent) at age 29. Type 1 Diabetes is when the body does not produce enough insulin. Insulin is a key hormone that metabolizes energy to the body. Without having your insulin in balance, you can become hypoglycemic placing one’s body in danger. Edwin started cycling to boost his energy level. He began researching how exercise and various foods (fats, proteins and carbs) have an impact on diabetes and the level of insulin he was administering to his body. With diet change and increased exercise Edwin was able to cut his insulin level by 85%. Diabetes does not have to slow you down! “Rotarians are the Peregrine Falcons of the world”.
