What a way to start our meeting! DeAnn Justessen led the flag salute, and Board Member Lee Ginsburg surprised us with the song choice of "God Bless America".  Our invocation was delivered by visiting Rotarian Ken Warner (Thousand Oaks) who enlightened us about Hineni, a biblical quote from Abraham, and compared it to Rotarians who indicate their readiness to serve.

 

Barbara Chilton updated the Street Fest TTT board and the fundraising thermometer.  We're on our way toward our goal!

PP Edwin Velarde announced the website is online for runner registrations for the 5k/10k on April 6.  If you're not up for running yourself, consider sponsoring someone to run.  A great way to encourage fitness and be charitable at the same time. Group 4 Community work day is April 5, Saturday.  All the projects are "painting" projects: NPHS cafeteria, fencing, quad stage.  Shifts begin at 7 a.m. and 9 a.m.  (Don't wear yourself out though, because our Street Fest is on Sunday April 6)  Sign-ups will be going around.

Today's Program:

Kris Carraway brought a team of Debbic Licht, Michael, Brittany, and Judy.  Together they described "Sidewalk CPR" and provided a mini-refresher course, complete with CPR dolls.  Members were eager to learn this life-saving technique.  Thank you!

Announcements:  Today is Jennifer Gears' birthday!  Celebrating this weekend: Barbara Chilton on the 24th and Gary Dickey on the 25th.  The Club serenaded them with a beautiful rendition of "Happy Birthday". 

 

Corporal at Arms Bob Marshall introduced our visitors (Bruce House brought a guest: Sam, a financial advisor), and Visiting Rotarians included Ken Warner from TO Rotary and Roger Myers, PP of Woodland Hills Rotary.

Today's program:

Jeff Woodcock, headmaster for Oaks Christian School.  

Jeff told us of how the founders began the school, and located the campus site.  Oaks Christian and the City of Westlake Village have had great cooperation, creating a joint use plan, where the sports fields are utilized by local youth sports programs for 1550 hours a year.  The faculty at Oaks have great knowledge of their subject, the skills to teach, and develop strong relationships with they kids they teach.  Among the non-academic opportunities are: service, government, athletics, and fine arts, because involved kids do better in school; the children of involved parents do better.  

Service is caught, not taught.

Ninety-eight percent of Oaks Christian graduates attend college, and 92% go to a four-year school.  

Jeff also addressed the CIF lawsuit.  CIF moved St. Bonaventure and OCS to the San Fernando Valley. 

Oaks' daily rotating schedule enables students to participate in afternoon activities without missing the same class every day.  

Jeff is retiring from his position this year.
