October 16 Mini Meeting
October 16:
PP Charles Bloomquist started us off with the Flag Salute, Naomi Finkle cheered for the Dodgers, and Stephanie Bell Harbourne delivered the invocation.

Guests: Stephanie's sister-in-law Debra
Visiting Rotarians: PP Woodland Hills, Roger Myers

Birthdays:
October 4  Brenda Small
October 10  Bill Hang
October 21  Cheri Blessing
October 23  Margie Price
October 30  Karen Quigley

Brian Hynes now has his red badge.  Be on the watch for Brian and help him get to his Blue Badge.  He quite possibly is the fastest red-badger to check off his "attend board meeting" requirement.

Committees are encouraged to hold committee meetings on these 'mini meeting' days.  Since most of us are planning to be at the club till 1:30 out of habit, let's make it easy to have committee meetings.

Announcements:
  • Jack Dwyer announced the Conejo Open Space Work Day for this Saturday October 19th.  For those of you unable to attend this weekend's District Conference, this might be a good way to spend your Saturday! Contact Jack for more information.
  • October is Vocational Service Month! Be good at your job.
  • District Governor Jack hosted the Friendship Team from District 3720 at Westlake lake this week.  Thanks to Bill Notthoff and Dapper Spar for offering their vessels for Jack's tour.  Thanks to Ed Pope for arranging the catering for the visitors from Korea and Mexico.
  • District Conference is this weekend.
  • October 24 is World Polio Day
  • PDG Arnie Dowdy passed away this week at his home.
Table Discussion Topic:  The Carlsbad club claims to have 500 members and A WAITING LIST!!  How can we make that happen here?

Book Drive
Marion Hall Marshall and Bob Marshall collect books and magazines every week, and deliver them to Los Robles Hospital.  Here is another opportunity to clear out your bookshelves.  The Westlake Sunrise Club has issued a challenge to collect 20,000 books for the benefit of Simon Technology Institute, a new
Charter High School in Watts which serves deserving
underprivileged children in that community and prepares them for
college.

Charter High will have their first graduation this spring.
Many of the graduates will be the first in their family to
graduate from high school.
Simon Technology’s Principal, Dr. Clarence Miller requires his
students to do community service and develop an attitude of
helping others. His motto is that he does not want the students
to pay back what they have received, but to pay it forward by
helping others the way they have been helped.
We are collecting not only books which can be used for the school
library, but also books suitable for elementary students (age
6-9) and adult level books (NO, not ‘adult’ books!) so the
students can go into the community and help others learn to read
or improve their reading skills. In short, we are collecting
books to be used not only to help the students with their own
reading, but also to allow them to be of service in their
community and beyond.
We thank you in advance for your support and look forward to
helping you clear out your bookshelves and closets. You can
reach us anytime by e mail (jmorse@morselawgroup.com) or speak to Jon in person when he comes to our club soon.
