Status: Completed, April 6, 2019
Location: Newbury Park High School
Project Description: A meal packaging event was hosted in the Newbury Park High School gym. On Saturday, April 6th, 2019, 12,312 meals were packaged with the help of over 75 volunteers from all over our community. Each meal consisted of rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables, and vitamin packets that were sealed in packages that could feed up to 6 people once hot water has been added. This project would not have been possible without the financial support of the Rotary clubs of Westlake Village and Newbury Park, our own Interact club, as well as donations from various members of our community.
Rise Against Hunger is an international hunger relief organization that distributes food and life changing aid to the world’s most vulnerable, mobilizing the necessary resources to end hunger by 2030. From the implementation of sustainable community development projects to the meal packaging program, they strive to make a global impact on hunger by building resilience, self sufficiency, and empowerment among the communities they work in and with. A few examples of their approaches to this goal include safety net programs that provide nourishment as well as additional skills training or services that support the difficult journey out of poverty, crisis relief to ensure aid is efficiently and effectively deployed to and received by communities when it is needed most, and agriculture and income-generating initiatives that promote improved agricultural methods, business skills, and market access to increase individuals' earning potential and thus their consistent access to food.
To contribute towards this UN sustainable development goal, Rise Against Hunger partnered with the North Country Mission of Hope to ensure these meals were administrated at schools in Nicaragua to encourage attendance. There used to be major attendance issues at the Hilario Sanchez School in Nicaragua. Students were not attending school to work in their family businesses to eat. If kids can get a warm meal at school, their parents are more likely to send them, recognizing the importance of that nutrition-sometimes their only meal of the day. With meal packaging events like these, things are changing for those kids in Nicaragua. Attendance rates are nearly 100% and academic performance has increased. One warm meal a day is leading to literacy.
Our Club Involvement: Our club supported local Interact clubs to host this event by providing manpower and donations
