A Bit of History
Rotary started with the vision of one man — Paul Harris. The Chicago attorney formed the Rotary Club of Chicago on 23 February 1905, so professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships. Paul Harris - Rotary founder.
Over time, Rotary’s reach and vision gradually extended to humanitarian service. Members have a long track record of addressing challenges in their communities and around the world.
Service Above Self Motto was established in 1989 the Council on Legislation as the principal motto of Rotary, because it best conveys the philosophy of unselfish volunteer service.
Rotary's Seven Areas of Focus: The Trustees of The Rotary Foundation have identified the seven areas of focus:
- Disease Prevention and Treatment
- Peace and Conflict Resolution
- Clean Water and Sanitation.
- Maternal and Child Health
- Basic Education and Literacy
- Economic and Community Development
- Supporting the Environment
